Special Olympics

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to Michelle and Stacy Graves for volunteering at the Eastern area Special Olympics today. If you know these girls, they can take an event and transform it into a wonderful thing. They were in charge of awards and did a fabulous job making sure the right kids got the right award. They were on a first name basis with many of them by the end of the day! It was great. I appreciate all the time and effort that was put into this day so that our special friends could have some much deserved fun! I will post some pictures when I get them.

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

Quick updates!

Oh so sorry for not updating. It has been crazy at work and trying to adjust to our new going to school schedule. The quickest Stone story I have is:
His teacher laughs at his southern accent all the time, but she said Stone's rendition of the Gingerbread Man was one of a kind. It went something like this (I am writing like he speaks):
Ru-in, Ru-in, a-is, fa-ist, a-is yooo ca-in...yooo CAINT ca-itch maeuh,Eye'um thugh gianger breauhd ma-in. The word can't was what got her- it is CAINT in these here parts! Poor Stone.
Sadie is doing great! She loves school and is a social butterfly. Her boyfriend, Logan, and his mom Mrs. Jamye, picked her up last week and she had a play date. She is still talking about it. She loves to be picked up by different people so if you are interested- let us know... She is waiting patiently on Mrs. Michelle (I know you are crazy-busy too!). I have her first day pictures to post- soon.
On a serious note: Please pray for my memaw. She is 87 and broke her hip last night. She will have surgery today and at her age they are putting in a pin. I am very close to her- we are kindred spirits in every way! Pray for mercy and grace as she endures this surgery and the post surgery treatments. Pray for my mom and her sibliings as they will have to make changes in their lives to accommodate her. I am planning on staying this weekend at the hospital so if anyone wants some young-uns to come play I would be most appreciative!

First Day Celebration

Well Stone loved it! He got up this morning and told me he was a little nervous. He then explained that he wasn't afraid but didn't know what it was going to be like. I told him that I get that feeling too. So we got ready and off we went. We prayed together in the car and that is the only time I got weepy. I quickly recovered and was just fine the rest of the day.
He got out of the car like a champ and every time I saw him today he was grinning from ear to ear. I was so proud of him. He didn't want to tell me details about his day but I am used to that. He will tell me everything when we have our "pillow talk" tonight. I am glad it is over and he is enjoying himself. Enjoy the pictures.

Oh my goodness!!

I cannot believe that my baby boy is about to be a full fledged kindergartner! It seems impossible that my 7lb 11oz baby is about to be a backpack toting student! I have watched little people do this for over 11 years but now that it is my little person I am so anxious for him. I know he will love school and have a lot of fun but this closes a chapter for him known as preschool and opens the big boy chapter! No longer will I be able to protect him from bad words, bad habits and bad people! I do however have the Lord on my side and will be praying daily that He watches over my little boy and guides him in the right direction. Next year I have to do this with Sadie so I better get used to it!
I can't wait for him to learn to read, write and expand his smart little brain! He is a gifted boy and I hope his teacher sees his gifts and capitalizes on those. At the beach we went shopping and he picked out such big boy clothes. I told him we would go buy school supplies together but I honestly don't know if I can. You might see a breakdown on aisle 4 of Walmart! This sounds like a job for Grammy (who by the way is in Italy right now!). Maybe when she returns she'll be up for the challenge. She is thrifty too so she can save me tears and money- what a deal!
Well, for all of those who have gone before me bring on the advice- I could use it.

Beach Post #3

When we were at the beach we had to go have some crazy fun! We filled our bellies at The Crab Trap and then went for the crazy fun at The Track. It was a very long night but everyone had tons of fun!!!

Beach Post #2

Our sweet friends, Kevin and Michelle Graves let us borrow a tent that made our days on the beach a piece of cake! I don't think I took any picture of the tent but we loved it and it saved us from the sun. The kids had a great time on the beach digging in the sand, covering up daddy (no camera that day), and just playing in the waves. We stayed from 10-6:30 with about a 1 hour break for lunch. I don't know who was more tired, us or the kids! Here's some sweet beach pics.

Beach Post #1

We went to the beach for a week and had a great time. We stayed at Royal Palms in Gulf Shores and had a lovely stay. We went with some sweet friends, The Haskins, and had a blast. Our kids loved swimming in the indoor and outdoor pools. Stone was entertaining as always and social Sadie met plenty of friends at the beach. We went to visit Lala, Bobo and Maggie (aka: Tonya and Charlie) at their posh place one day to swim and play. They stayed in Pensacola at Mediterra and it is very nice! In these pics you will see grown people chicken fighting in the pool, a very large jelly fish, and some very cute little people!

Let Freedom Ring.....

We had a great time on the 4th with some dear friends, the Shepards and the Lincolns. The Shepards were kind enough to open their pool to us and we had some good ol' BBQ from Jim N Nicks. The kids were so worn out that afternoon and I am sure Jesse was from playing as hard as Stone did most of the day. The cute pooch is the infamous, Rocky Balboa. Here's some pics.

Mandi Logan, "Your father is a good man"

Stone said that to me (it is from the end of Night at The Museum when Teddy Roosevelt says it). But it is true- he is a good man! I wrote a long ditty about my mom, but my feelings for dad are much more difficult to put into words. It's a different kind of relationship than the one I have with my mom (not better, not worse, just different).
So the picture tells you alot about my dad. He was an upper level employee for most of his work life in major computer corporations. He made 6 digit salaries, traveled often, but always remained devoted to his family, church and relationship with God. Then about 5 years ago, the Lord started him on a different journey. He tried a few smaller companies but it just didn't work out. He never was discouraged because he knew the Lord was in control. Well, he is very smart and has a math and physics degree from Birmingham Southern. Since I am in education I started telling him how hard it is to find good math and science teachers. He pondered it and God started opening some doors and this will be his second year as an eighth grade physical science teacher. This picture is him at space camp a few weeks ago. An almost 60 year old man enduring a week of space camp. He loved it! He loves teaching and is passionate about it. He loves his students and even cried that he had to give them up at the end of the year. He finds teaching very rewarding and we all love to see how enthusiastic he is about it.
I think God had been preparing him all of his life for this moment. Would he be as effective if he had not had all of that upper level management training? Probably not. Maybe he needed to raise 3 teenagers before he could skillfully teach them. I am amazed at how well he relates to 8th graders (which is a hard grade level to love!) He has an ipod, is very fluent with his laptop, and knows how to podcast, blog and wiki with the best of them. He doesn't sound like the typical almost 60 year old.
That just barely skims the surface of why he is so wonderful! I thank God that I have parents who have modeled for us how to follow God's plan even when it is not evident. My dad will forever be my: bee sting healer, charlie horse giver, field trip buddy, daddy date partner, science project helper, driving lesson instructor, late night scolder, boyfriend scrutinizer, wedding day hero, gramps of the year, husband of the year, spontaneous traveler, roller coaster chum, and my safe place.

Thanks for all you have done,do and will do. I know I'm not the easiest but you are there no matter what. I love you- DD.

Gay Nelle Benson Jones

This post is a tribute to my wonderful mom! In honor of mother's day I wanted her to know why I think she's the best.
I was more than a trying child and she has always been VERY patient with me. Ever since I was a little girl I can remember her always taking me to gymnastics, church functions, cheerleading practice, games, etc... I was also one of three kids who had equally as busy lives. She always made sure we were involved in something and that it was good. Knowing that, you know that she had very little time for herself. While she did not have a formal job, she was daily volunteering at the church or school. When we got ready for school, she was getting ready for the day. To say that she was a stay at home mom is a joke because she rarely stayed at home. However, our house was always clean and dinner was always made. Here are some things I love about my mom.
I love the way she always made my favorite meal on my birthday and to this day she still does that. I love the way she let me sleep with her even when I was in my twenties (not every night just on occasion). I love the way she would ask me all about my date and if he kissed me and we'd giggle like school girls while I sat on her bed. I love the way I later found out that she only asked me those questions to make sure my breath smelled non intoxicated (I sure do appreciate that now as a parent!- very clever mom). I love the way she would always be the mom that dropped us off and picked us up- I never questioned who would be there for me. I love the way she loves my daddy and flirts with him all the time. I love the way she laughs from deep inside. I love the way she looks at me when she notices I've stolen jewelry from her and wear it like it's mine! I love the way she indulges me- if I asked her to go dancing tonight she most likely would. I love the way I can call her ten times a day and she acts like it's the first time we talked. I love the way she loves me unconditionally! I love the way we talk about growing old together. I love the way I can get a coke and snack every morning I drop the kids off and she keeps my favorite stocked. I love the way she emails me funny or sentimental stories. I love the way we can see someone or something in public and give each other eye contact and we know exactly what the other is saying. I love the way we can laugh at that incident until we almost wet our pants. I love the way she sets me straight when I am being petty, selfish or am just plain wrong. I love the way she takes time for herself and time for her man. I love the way she takes care of and respects her mother. I love that she cares for my children in the same way. I love that no matter what this earth holds for us that I'll be with her in Heaven for eternity.
She is my very best friend, my security blanket, my secret keeper, my accountability, my cheerleader, my heart.....my mom!!!!

Book Review

While I was basking in the sun I read a great book I wanted to share with you. It is entitled The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. Since I have been mesmerized by people with special needs most of my life this book was fascinating to me. However, it is a book for everybody because it deals with the sacred moments we have in life that often we take for granted. Every little incident that occurs with your family helps shape who your kids will become. Do you spend too much time at work or at play? Are the moments you have at home quality moments or are you just there taking up space? These are challenging, soul searching questions you ask yourself when you read this book. If my children were born with a disability would my life be better or worse? At first thought we might think worse, but read the book and find out what happened to this family. Here's a summary of what happens:

This stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins.
His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. For motives he tells himself are good, he makes a split-second decision that will haunt all their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child as her own. Compulsively readable and deeply moving, The Memory Keeper's Daughter is a brilliantly crafted story of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love

Time for a break

George has once again secured a wonderful FREE weekend to the beach for us. He buys his materials from Mayer Lightning and in return they give us a trip! We went last year and it was wonderful. We stay at Sandestin and for those of you who have never been- you won't stay anywhere else once you go! We started going there after our first trip this time last year and our kids love it. It can be pricey but if you watch it close you can get a deal. When I take a vacation, I do it right and Sandestin pampers you like no other.
We will play all day Friday and then Friday night enjoy a steak dinner. Saturday, George will get up early and play golf most of the day and I will sleep in and get a massage at the spa around 11:00. This is all complimentary from Mayer Lighting- how great! They will have a condo open 24-7 that is stocked with food and drinks. On Sunday I'll spend a little time at the beach before we head home.
I love this trip! For those of you who don't know me so well, I love to be by myself. I could survive on a desert island without anybody else. So- this trip is right up my alley- a day at the beach all by myself with a good book!!!!!
I'll try to take some pictures, but no promises since I am planning on bumming it!

Play that funky music......

My husband is in a band! I wish he would have decided to do it earlier in life when I actually hung out at bars and got into the whole band thing. Oh well, now I can at least sleep with a band member! They played at Clay May Days and will also play at Dog Daze in Trussville and Oneonta's festival in June. The lead band member is Mark Dunn who plays an incredible saxophone!!!! Bryan Haskins plays keyboard and is lead vocals. George is the drummer. Mark Jr. is the lead guitarist and Greg Reid is the bass player. They were really good!! You should hear them.

Sing it Baby!

My precious ones sang in church last Sunday night. They were both very comfortable on stage for which I am thankful. Stone was very serious and did every motion and sang loudly. He had been threatened within every inch of his life if he acted like a clown!! I'm glad to know it worked. Sadie also did the motions and sang every word. I was a proud mommy!

Easter

George and I had to be at the church at 6:00am because he was playing the drums and I was singing. It was a long day but well worth the worship and message at church. At our church, Crosspoint, we have a tradition called "flowering the cross". Everyone brings fresh flowers and adorns the cross. By the end of the day it is beautiful and a reminder that our Savior died a horrible death for our sins. Thank goodness 3 days later he rose again and will come for me one day!
The kids loved their Easter buckets not baskets at our house. They had a fun Easter egg hunt at Grammy's, one of many that day.

When Mommy is Away.....

This is what happens when I am away. On this particular night I was at school and George decided to take pictures of the fun for me.

Spring Break

I know this past week was spring break week for some but not for us. We had spring break back in March and took a short trip to Chatanooga. We stayed at the Chatanooga Choo Choo and had a great time - hope you enjoy the pictures.

Virginia Massacre

It has been a while since I have posted but I am having camera trouble and the spring season in a school system is just a crazy/busy time.
My heart is so heavy for the families and friends of the students killed yesterday. As I prayed for these unknown people, I just felt helpless and hopeless for these people. When you send your kids off to college it is supposed to be a fun, life-changing experience. It is not supposed to end this way.
Our society today is so spontaneous that you never know what "crazy" is going to come out of the woodwork and dream up next. There are times I am sad that I brought children in to this troubled world. (That does not mean I have regrets! I wouldn't do it differently if I could.) I am fearful for them. What will they have to face in their lifetime? How can I keep them safe? These questions weigh heavily on me at times.
Now, having said that, I know that we have hope. I know where my eternity lies and I am going to do everything I can to make sure my kids know the Lord and that they secure their eternity. But when you think about death, you don't want it to be a shooting or anything violent. I pray, selfishly, that the Lord allows me to see my kids grow up and that they come to know Him- I want to be there for that. I also pray that I die peacefully- like in my sleep or unconsciously.
So- am I the only one who thinks and actually prays about this? Let me know your thoughts.
I promise the next blog will be happier- but death is inevitable so we might as well be up front about it.

Splish Splash

Only in Alabama can cousins bathe together! Can you say Redneck?
It sure is cute!

Discaster

The sumo baby, Daniel, had a little accident. He fell off a porch while visiting his Granny in Mississippi this past weekend. Leah and Grammy spent all day trying to find a doctor that would see an out of state patient when they ended up at Children's Hospital. Needless to say they were there for a long time. He had a buckle fracture on his fibula (I think). It took Leah, Grammy and 2 doctors to hold him down so they could cast him. Leah has to take him back next week to get a better cast and check it again. Leah is one worn out mother. If you'll remember he is a hefty fella anyway and the cast just adds additional weight. He hasn't figured out how to walk with it so he must crawl (not good for the hardwoods) or be transported by human. Please pray for his speedy recovery and his mother's back! After he ate some food, got his comfy jammies on, and took some Motrin- he was in better spirits!

The Bombs Bursting In Air......

Gramps, a.k.a. the science guy, built some rockets and launched them with his students. He had some left over rockets and being the good Gramps that he is, he let the kids launch some too. They are made of water bottles and a few other supplies. You have to pump air into a special launch pad that the water bottle sits on. Then you count down and pull the string and watch them fly! Here are a few pics.

Out of Towners

My sister in law is in town for a couple of weeks and my kids are thrilled! Not because she's in town, but because she brought her children! They are 8,6, and 18 months. We were praying before bed time last night and Stone asked Jesus if He could help his cousin Eliot to not be an "out of towner" anymore. How precious! I wish they lived closer but it gives us a place to visit and something to look forward to. Eliot is great for Stone in many ways! Tonight Stone ate the crust on a grilled cheese sandwich and that is a first. When I told him how proud I was he said it was because he wanted to grow big like Eliot! I need Eliot for a few weeks so I can get Stone to try other things! I'll take the crust for now.
Little Sadie has had the best time with "Baby Daniel". However, she is clueless that this little cousin weighs more than she does. This kid is a hoss! He is so cute. Sadie adores him and comes home playing mommy with her stuffed animals. Last night Baby Daniel was her stuffed Elephant- how appropriate! We are going to enjoy them all we can for the next week.

More Birthday Fun

In true Sadie fashion, she had a series of events.
Wednesday: her real birthday- she got her seesaw
Wednesday night: Ms. Kristen gave her a birthday cupcake at church
Friday: Her class birthday celebration at school
Friday evening: Lala and Maggie bring gifts
Saturday: her real birthday party

She can milk it!!!

Birthday Party

So we had the birthday party for the little girl... it was lots of fun. She had exactly the amount of friends as her age- 4. She thought it was great and so did I since it was easy as pie! We had pizza, drinks, cake and ice cream. I stuffed a pinata at Sadie's request. We had it at our church, Crosspoint, because it would be fun to play on the playground but it was a little too cold. They had a great time playing in the preschool classrooms instead. They hopped from room to room and had a blast. Sadie thanked me for her birthday and said it was the best- which proves you don't have to spend a fortune to have fun!
When I was growing up, my family did not celebrate birthdays with a big bash. Mom made your favorite meal or we went out to eat. There was never any upset feelings over who didn't come to the party or anxiety over who to invite. I attended big birthday bashes for my friends but I always enjoyed our simple birthdays. I am trying to create that for my kids as well. I want them to learn that the amount of people or money spent does not equal friendship or self worth. I spent exactly $80 dollars each on their birthday parties this year and if you ask them- they had a blast! Enjoy the pictures.

My Sweet Sadie

Today is my baby girl, Sadie's birthday. She is four today. I write my children very personal letters on their birthdays and seal them for when they are older (probably when they enter college or get married). As I was writing her letter, I thought of all the characteristics that God bestowed to Sadie and how those characteristics might be utilized in her future. Here is a snippet of what I wrote:
My sweet Sadie,
As I reflect on all the wonders you bring to my life, my heart wells with thanksgiving to the God who created you for His glory and my happiness. You are filled with so many valuable characteristics and I am imagining where these will take you in life. You have a real sense of nurturing. You are always loving your babies and stuffed animals by making sure they are warm, covered with a blanket, fed, and content. I love watching you play when you are not aware that I am looking. You are going to be a great mother! You are also going to be a great friend to those who may be in the greatest need of a friend. I love you so much for that because I will need your friendship as well. Your Grammy and I have a very close friendship and it is a vital part of my being -I hope you see that and desire for us to have that as well......
The rest is for Sadie's eyes only... Happy Birthday sweet girl!

Crazy kids

The kids have been quite silly this week! Could be left over effects from all the birthday cake- who knows? I am desperately trying to capture their American Idol performances as they are quite hilarious. These pictures are from Sunday night when they played with a crazy winter hat I bought last year for a New York trip and pictures of Sadie's cute braids!

Birthday Marathon

* Stone and Sadie had marathon birthday parties this weekend. 2 were family birthday parties for cousins and 1 was a friend party. Here are pics from a family party.

Is giving back important???

Recently, someone asked me this question, "Is giving back really as important as we say it is?" The person that asked has a pessimistic attitude on most topics and always is a devil's advocate in a conversation. However, I love her and she comes in handy when you need a different perspective!! The basis for the question came when she overheard someone ask me about respite care.
For those of you who don't know what it is.... it is a time for parents of kids with disabilities to take a break! It occurs every 2nd Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm. Well, she asked me why I did it when my plate is usually so full. I did not give the long version of why I do it but the summary is this:
I have always loved kids with special needs! I knew in high school that I wanted to teach them. I have a God given passion for them and so why not? I know how hard it is to have kids and trudge through the everyday routines. However, I cannot imagine how compounding that routine becomes when you have to load and unload a wheelchair 10 times a day, change your 10 year old child's diaper each day, go to 5 specialists each week for therapy, or just sit down and try to have a family meal without plates flying from a tantrum. And because I don't know what that feels like (but I can guess), I have to give them a break. I get one all the time because I have wonderful parents and in-laws who will let me.
It is not easy to find someone who will baby sit for kids with special needs and it is unheard of to find overnight care. So really I am not doing enough in that area to find more respite for them.
So is it really important that I do this? Sure it is. Will I get rich, get recognition, get a job promotion- NO. But that is not why I do it to begin with. I would hope that if I were in their shoes (and I could be at a moment's notice) that someone would help me too.
I could find so many things to do on those Saturday's but I feel really great after respite care knowing that a difference was made for someone that day. We have some middle and high schoolers volunteering now and it is so wonderful to see the relationships formed and the knowledge build surrounding this very special population.
I do believe that I am in the presence of angels when these kids are near. God has a distinct purpose for all of His creations and the innocence and absence of selfishness from these children indicate to me Christ likeness- they have to be angels! I can't wait to get to Heaven and see them walk, run, talk, laugh, smile and praise Him the way we all will!

Remnants of Disney

We are back into our usual routines and getting back to reality. There are still things to be put up and some clothes to be washed, but other than that- the house is normal. The kids are still talking about Disney but I think they are glad to be at home with their own toys and sleeping in their own beds.
I had about 185 emails to sift through when I got back and I am finally at a point of weeding them down to about 20 that need a reply. It is hard to be off work for that long, but I sure did enjoy it. I am glad to get back to work where I don't have to push a stroller or carry a back pack for 15 hours!!!
Hi Ho Hi Ho.............

Disney Day 6

Another great day! This will be my last post until we return home. Today we started in Epcot. We arrived early and were able to see the characters by ourselves because no one else was in there for a while. It was great for the kids. Goofy cut up with them for a while and gave them some stickers that they are treasuring. The kids loved the Nemo ride and watching the real fish in the huge tanks. Stone loved Test Track and Soarin. Sadie couldn't ride so I made sure that she had some special attention today. She got to do the Jr. Chef at Epcot. They allow approximately 15 kids to bake cookies in this precious kitchen area. The pictures are cute and she felt like she was on top of the world! It was good that she could do something for once that no one else could (Stone was not interested at all which helped the situation).
We went to the Magic Kingdom for the afternoon and had a blast in Toon Town. Stone of course hit his 2 favorites- Thunder Mtn Railroad and Splash Mtn. To top it off we had faces painted. Stone wanted his daddy to do it too so he did. What a good sport! They think they are so awesome with their faces painted.
When taking the monorail from MK to Epcot, Stone and Sadie got to be the co-pilots and ride in the front car with the driver. They got their license to co-pilot card and they think they are cool! It was fun and a nice treat! We went back to Epcot tonight for our Grand Gathering Illuminations Dinner. It was the best event of the week and appropriately fell on our last night in Disney. We had an international meal served buffet style. They had a children's buffet that was on kid size tables so they could get it themselves. We had live entertainment by "Aunt Roz" and "DJ T.J.". Minnie and Goofy showed up and Sadie danced with both. Stone was not for all the group fun so he sat it out. We were escorted to a private area outside by the water where we were served dessert and coffee and we watched Illuminations which was gorgeous! The kids sat and looked at it with their jaws dropped the entire time. It was very memorable.
Overall, we have had a fantastic time. I will certainly do it again but it will be a while before we come for another visit. I think 7 and 8 will be nice ages to do it again. That gives us about 4 years to plan and save. We spared no expense this time and it was the way to go. I want to be able to do that again. The "extras" were well worth it! Thanks for all who commented- it kept us connected to home. See you soon.

Disney Day 5

Today was Animal Kingdom. I have to say that it was just okay. It was not my favorite. There are a lot of things to look at but not a whole lot to actually do- especially if you are a 4 or 5 year old. We saw 2 good shows (Nemo and Lion King), rode Everest twice, and went on a Safari. After that it was pretty much meeting characters and walking around. It was nice to relax and not have to go from ride to ride but then again it was boring at times. Here's the pics for today!
Trina, Larry, George and I are going out for some adult fun tonight. Mimi and Pops are playing with the kids while we go.
Tomorrow is Epcot.

Disney Day 4

We had a blast today. It was a "Magical Hours" day at Magic Kingdom so we stayed until 11:00. The kids fell asleep before we got out of the park! We hopped over to MGM for some fun late in the afternoon. We saw a great parade and had great seats! Here's the pics from the day.
Stone rode Thunder Mtn 3 times today! He is hooked. He also rode Splash Mtn and Tower of terror. He wasn't thrilled about Tower of Terror but he did it. He calls it Tower of Death!
Sadie has had a good time shopping with Mimi while we rode the coasters. Stone is not tall enough for Space Mtn and others- he only meets the 40" rides.
When we took the bus to MGM it was VERY crowded and for some reason Stone wanted to entertain the bus. He has the whole bus laughing and I was about to wet my pants. First of all his accent is so thick that it alone made everyone laugh. The clincher was when he started dancing and did the Geico commercial with Mini Me (It's my birthday, got my car fixed...)- somebody asked where he learned the dance and he hollered- Oh you know it's the Geico commercial. What barely 5 year old knows that junk?
We had a great dinner at Liberty Tree- family style dinner with characters. He gave all the characters tater handshakes (with your fists) and they thought that was funny.
You'll notice in most pictures that we are wearing hats- it was a bit chilly but only in the morning and late night. The northerners that we talked to laughed at us because they said it was a tropical day to them.
Still no long lines today- the most was 20 minutes- can't beat that.
Well I am pooped. Tomorrow is Animal Kingdom- stay tuned!

Disney day 3

Wow another fun day! We began our day with a character breakfast at Tony's Town Restaurant (Lady and Tramp theme). At first the kids were apprehensive about meeting the characters but they warmed up and had a blast. We saw the big rat (as Gramps calls him) and all the main characters. We did the whole picture thing and got that out of our way. Then we started riding again. Check the pics for more details.
I was delighted that I have "roller coaster kids". I am all about fast, death defying, make your insides quiver kind of rides so I was a little worried that I would have scaredy kids and be doomed to a life on the bench. Not so! They rode Goofy's roller coaster and begged for more. We got Stone in the line for Thunder Mountain Railroad and the crazy thing broke. Tomorrow we will let him check out the big roller coasters and see what he thinks. Sadie is not tall enough and she is not happy about that. Poor child- her mother is a shorty!
We had a great day in the Magic Kingdom and enjoyed our time. The crowds are so low that even the Fast Passes aren't available for most attractions because the wait time is already so short. We have had great weather for the most part (of course the 2 minute showers are annoying).
Tonight we took a Grand Gathering Magical Fireworks Voyage. Hook, Smee and Pan were all there. We took a boat ride and got to see the Electric Water Pageant and the Wishes fireworks from the boat. It was awesome. Stone won a sword- oh goody! Sadie won a periscope- she gave it to her brother. They both answered trivia questions on the boat.
It was an eventful and memorable day to say the least. Who knows what day 4 will hold?

Disney day 2

Where do I begin? Today has been amazing. We began our day at MGM and had a blast! The weather was in the high 70's and overcast which made for a great day. Stone was able to meet the power rangers and he was on cloud nine the rest of the day. I think he would have been fine to go home after that. Sadie loved The Little Mermaid show.
We ate dinner at The Whispering Canyon Cafe and it is a must for all families!! It was so fun. The kids had races and if you need ketchup you yelled and they brought you about 8 jars. Then whenever the next table needed it and yelled, you take it to them. George asked for a coke and they brought him a huge coke for fun (see pics). It was just fun- we laughed so hard I almost....well you know.
Then we decided to go to the Magic Kingdom for a couple of hours. We arrived about an hour before they closed and got to see the Wishes parade and fireworks and ride the tea cups, Dumbo, and Peter Pan's wild ride. It was great and the kids were amazed at the castle. Yes I did shed a tear or 2!
I am dog tired and ready for bed. We are eating breakfast with the characters in the morning then tomorrow night is our fireworks voyage with Captain Hook!
Check the pics for more details of today's events. Thanks for all the comments- we enjoy reading them.

Disney day 1

Well.... we are here!!!! Right now it is 1:45pm and the kids are fast asleep for a nap. They had to wake up around 4:00am so a nap was a must. They loved the plane and the "space cab" that takes you to the main airport terminal. We are staying at the Animal Kingdom Resort...check out the pics. It is numero uno! The kids have jumped and screamed at every thing around here in excitement. This day alone has been worth the entire trip. If I knew bunk beds would excite them so much I would have a set at home.
It does not smell like animals thank goodness. It is about 70 degrees and people are swimming outdoors- not many but some. No thanks.
We are eating at the Concourse Steakhouse tonight and looking forward to a juicy side of beef! Wish you were here!!!!!

Movie Mania

George is with me at a conference in Orange Beach for a few days. We have been trying to do things we could not normally do at home with kids. So far we have seen 2 movies. We saw Night at the Museum last night and Freedom Writers tonight. Both have turned out to be great movies!

My favorite of the 2: Freedom Writers because it is an educational flick. However, it is so much more than that. Hillary Swank plays a first year teacher and chooses to teach in a district that has voluntary integration in California. It is a very diverse group of students who are labeled as worthless. She is to teach them English.

It stereotypes most school systems perfectly. There are the "chosen" administrators who care less about kids and blame students when they act uncouth in their classroom. However, they never think to examine their own teaching techniques as the cause for the misbehavior.

Of course I won't give it away but Hillary does what is right for her students in the end.

I am so thankful to be employed with a system that believes in students and challenges teachers to do whatever it takes to get kids to learn at high levels. I get sad sometimes that I never was able to teach kids in that sort of environment. Most of my teaching was done in a system that cared more about their rules and regulations than what kids actually learned. If the desks were in a row and kids were quiet and working then you were a good teacher.

I am so thankful that my kids will learn in an environment that is open to do whatever to reach kids. If it means they stand on tables or sit on bare floors to learn- that's great. Sometimes doing what has always been done is not the best thing to do.

Spiritually speaking, I have to examine my life that way too. Sometimes I get into ruts and I do what I have always done but don't accomplish much. Staying comfortable can often be dangerous. I thank God for the freedom to write whatever I want on this blog and my prayers are with those who have to keep their thoughts private for fear of death. That is a reality for many people in this world. Go see Freedom Writers and if you are not inspired to write- something is wrong with you.

"Phone ears"

Can you believe that preschoolers have MP3 players? My kids have FP3 players from Fisher Price and they are loving it. Sadie calls the ear phones her phone ears when she is in a hurry and it cracks us up. I have downloaded all sorts of Disney tunes for them. It is so funny to listen to them sing because it is so loud. The nice thing about these is that they are kid proof and also have stories you can pair with icon pictures.

These kids are growing up in such a digital age and you just cannot help but wonder what they will be when they grow up. Where will technology take them? I read Freidman's book, The World is Flat last summer and it is an eye opener for what our world is becoming due to technology. It affects all facets of our world.

Anyway- my intent was that these new gadgets would keep my kids occupied on the plane, during long waits in line and just during boring times! So far so good- they both fell asleep last night with them and I had to pry them off their ears.

Packing Ughhh!

Can you ever pack enough for a trip? People that can pack one outfit each day and minimal "others" just gripe me. I am trying to lay out all we will need and it is a daunting chore. I have a list of things that Disney recommends and boy howdy is it a lot. I am going to do the best I can and then just punt if I have to. Stone's teacher keeps asking if she can get in his suit case and he woke up from his nap today and asked me why people would want to travel in a suit case when they could just fly with us- what a sweet boy.

Sadie has not stopped sleeping with her Disney stuff that the Grave's (Michelle, Kevin, Justin, and Maegan) brought her. She got a Tink bag and shirt, a precious Mickey shirt that is beaded or shiny as Sadie calls it. She also wears her Mickey poncho around the house. They gave the kids light necklaces that are just too cool. Stone looks at himself with his new hat on and thinks he looks cute. We are very appreciative to them for enhancing our trip. They are already practicing for autographs with their light up pens.

Needless to say, we will probably be prepared thanks to all the friends who have helped us and given us great advice. We are down to 5 days and counting!!!!!!!

Back to packing- Uggh!!!!!

Little Drummer Boy

Our little drummer boy had his first lesson today. He started taking drum lessons from Gary Asher. When you see the pictures you will understand why he had a hard time paying attention to the real reason we were with Gary- to learn to play the drums. Gary has wall to wall drums and I mean floor to ceiling when I say that. It is amazing who he knows and whose drums he has. He had a set of drums from the Tom Hanks movie That Thing You Do and from Drumline. It was really cool.

George is in the basement practicing with him right now and he is being very patient with Stone. The hard part right now is playing right, left and then changing to left, right when you are not fluent with which hand is right and which is left. Stone came home from school with a green stamp on his right hand so that is his visual reminder for now.

I hope over the next three months that the code of music becomes meaningful to him and he is able to translate that into playing music when presented a piece. We'll see how it goes and I'll keep everyone posted! See more pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/68212054@N00/

MANIA

This is what happens when you even mention the word Disney these days! Pure mania breaks out. Thanks to Mimi for fueling the fire with a new video of Disney World attractions! This was when they announced to Mickey Mouse that they were here! I assured them that he would be able to hear them anywhere in the park.
Thanks to Uncle Andy, Aunt Leah, Emma, Eliot, and baby Daniel for sending the precious Mickey photo book. We can't wait to get autographs and put cute pictures in it. Leah did all the cute work ahead of time by putting the stickers on the pages. She knows me well- it would have been 2014 before that happened.

Riding Dumbo

This is Stone's artistic inerpretation of what the Dumbo ride might be like. By all accounts, I think his choice of subjects was genius! I love those kiddos!

Wiggle Jiggle

I had to post this even though it may be TMI (too much info). My cute Sadie who is oh so blonde, asked me Sunday morning as I was getting dressed why I wore a brazier.
At first I was offended- why wouldn't I wear one but then I realized she was three and could not have meant that in an insulting way.
I did not have an immediate politically correct answer so I just brushed her off and said, because my mommy told me to wear one. Well that was not a satisfactory answer so she came up with a jeopardy answer in the form of a question on her own.
She asked, "You wear one so they won't wiggle jiggle?" Ding ding ding- give that blonde girl a twinkie!!!!!
I said yes and went on my merry way- wiggle jiggle free!
Don't you wish every one was wiggle jiggle free?

Shopping is NOT fun

I have never liked shopping as long as I can remember. Today was no exception. It is somewhat difficult to shop with the kids, but that's not the reason I don't like it. I tried on about 10 outfits in one store and left with nothing. That is a lot of work for nothing. Being short is terrible when it comes to buying clothes. I was trying to find some casual sets to travel in but inevitably they were all too long, too tight in the rear and too loose through the waist, or just weird looking!!!!!
Has anyone ever heard of petites besides the major stores??? It would be nice to go into a discount store and find petites. Oh well, I'll go to the expensive stores next week and pray for a sale.
On the bright side I got the disposable cameras, valentine cards, a house warming gift for Aunt Stacy and Uncle Lee, and other little stuff. Grammy found us some light sticks at another dollar store- we need those for night time at Disney- thanks Grammy.
I think I have everything I need and I plan to start packing next weekend so I will have plenty of time to think of any necessary items without feeling rushed.
George worked at the church today and had a great time. He said that Hans V. does an incredible Arnold Schwarzenegger impression. Only George would ask someone from Germany to do that. I asked him if he made him do the "pump you up" skit from Saturday Night Live and he said Hans did that for him without having to ask. Can't wait to hear it for myself. There's never a dull moment when George is around.
We went to see Aunt Stacy and Uncle Lee's new house tonight. It is in Hayden, AL and it is very cute! We had fun visiting and laughing. Stone provided lots of entertainment as always. He went home to spend the night with Mimi and Pops. Sadie wanted to remain with her mommy. She's passed out next to me now- I'll move her in a little while. Shopping is not her thing either but she was a trooper today.
Well- it's been a busy Saturday and I am ready for some shuteye!

Disney Count Down!!!!

The Logan's are going to Disney World very soon. In 13 days we will be there. I am so excited!!! Tomorrow I am taking the kids to the dollar store to pick out disposable cameras for their use on the trip. It will keep them busy while waiting in lines and we might actually get some neat photos from their perspective (minus all the rear end shots we get! )
My sweet friend, Sweesha (as pronounced by my kids), let me borrow her Canon Rebel digital camera. Is that a friend or what? She came by tonight and had chili with us. It was good to see her and spend some time with her. The kids loved her visit the most! Pray for her as she is having an MRI and brain scan on Monday due to recent symptoms- they are concerned she may have MS. I will let you know the results, but she is in good faith that God is sovereign and is already in control of that situation.
Stone got a haircut today so that he would be all cute for the trip- thanks Mimi!
I am putting together outfits that can be versatile for whatever we have. I am going with layers that could be put on or taken off with ease. For anyone going to Disney anytime soon you must explore http://www.allearsnet.com/. It has taught me so much that I would have never known!
I am also working on posting pictures over the weekend. I intend to download pictures from the trip each day so that those who cannot be with us can see what we are doing and interact with us!!
Now it's time to say goodbye to all our family.....M-I-C-K-E-Y....I am way too excited. Adios

The name game

I read the sweetest story yesterday of how our music minister, Bryan Haskins, named his miracle baby boy (read here http://www.justonemore.info/). I thought I'd share why my children have their names.
I was pregnant in January of 2001 but had a miscarriage shortly after finding out. We had been trying to have a baby from the time we were married in November of 1999. SO, needless to say I had names picked out. I felt she was a girl, so her name would have been Sydney Hope Logan. There was no special reason for it- I just liked it.
I then found out a few months later that I was pregnant again- this time a boy (I wanted 3 boys most of my life-why I don't' know). I loved the name Stone but wanted him to have a middle name that meant something special and I wanted to use the initials from the first baby so they would carry meaning even though we did not have her. I went to a family reunion on my father's side where there was much discussion about the patriarch of his family- Locke Houston (L.H.) Jones. My oldest brother carries the middle name Locke. I understand that L.H. was a hard working man that you just did not mess with. I liked what I heard and loved the name Houston. Therefore, I now have Stone Houston Logan. It fits him in every way!
13 months later I gave birth to a little girl- just what I needed but I did not know that at the time! I played with her name over and over. I love my daddy and always have been a daddy's girl so I wanted to name her after him but it just never fit. I had Merry Lawrence Logan picked out for a long time but like I said- it did not fit. Now I know why- she is such a Sadie and all that know her would agree. While she is girly like a Merry Lawrence, she is not dainty nor prim. She is a pistol, a ball of fire, determined and stubborn as the day is long!!! Much like her mother and her Aunt Catrina. Her middle name is my grandmother's (memaw) maiden name. If there is one person who can make me laugh and that I just enjoy spending time with (other than my husband) it is my memaw. So I wanted my little girl to have a part of her. Therefore I have Sadie Hamilton Logan. It fits her in every way!
And now you know that I named my children and my precious husband let me and he agreed- no arguments, no discussions- it was quite easy.
I thank God every day for my children and the joy, challenges, and hope they bring to me.

Soap and the VCR

What a morning! My precious 5 year old son was using some language that we don't allow as a way to interrupt my conversation with his grandmother (he was saying "what the heck is that" over and over). I gave him a warning and said that I would be with him in a moment, then he said it 2 more times. I calmly stopped my conversation and took him by the elbow into the bathroom where I put a drop of liquid soap in his mouth.
Of course he went ballistic and the priceless part was this comment (as he was crying): I'm going to call those VCR people and tell them you put soap in my mouth! After much confusion, I finally realized that he meant DHR- in my line of work he has heard me talk about that a few times. I have always said it is for mean mommies.
I guess they will be coming to get me soon!
Got to go and brew up more mean things to do!

What a Day!

Today, Monday, was a holiday in most professions. I got to enjoy the day with S and S at home! We watched our newest movie, Air Buddies, and snuggled in as it became dreary and cold.
I enjoyed putting together some of Stone's birthday presents and coloring with Sadie.
I always am amazed after a day with the kids that some moms do this everyday. I just am not cut out for that!
I am thankful everyday for Godly parents that take and pick up my kids from preschool each day! I wish I had known my grandparents as well as my kids know theirs. The Bible speaks of the wisdom of our elders and what we can learn from them. I have to say- I think I have the wisest parents of all!
Last night was our Leadership Community (LC) at church and George was able to discuss his current involvement in the music ministry and what God is doing through that opportunity. His basic message was- get plugged in and be a Crosspointer as opposed to just coming to Crosspoint. I am so proud of him. It was a great LC.
Well, I am going to call it a day- Oh- and for those of you who know me this will be a shock- but I have to go and check on dinner. Yes, I said dinner! I am cooking tonight (for the 6th night in a row)! God still performs miracles- even to the least of these!
